Suicide Awareness Week

If you haven’t realised already or seen things bobbing around social media, this week is suicide awareness week and think this is something we all need to be aware of! Suicide impacts so many people we don’t actually realise, we need to raise awareness to stop the stigma and taboo surrounding suicide.

So there is so much to touch on with this post, I think it could be a long one and I am not sure where to start… so I am just going to get on with, so here we go!

What are suicidal feelings?

I think this is a good way to start as not many people really have that much understanding of this as they can just see it as ‘over reacting’. So suicidal feelings are not seeing any point of being alive anymore, you hate yourself, you feel as though you are just a pain to people around you and that they would be better off without you. These feelings/thoughts can be unbearable, trust me I have been there and I know the effect these can have on you!

It can affect anyone however, there are plenty of risk factors which can mean someone is more likely to be suicidal.

Getting help

Most people going through these feelings actually act upon them and it leaves devastating results behind. This is mainly due to the people suffering not wanting to carry on and mainly not seeking the help they need. So what do you do if you are in the situation….

You need to get yourself to A&E or contact someone, so here are a few options to go ahead with.

  • Call 999 if you cannot make your own way to A&E and an ambulance will bring you to your local A&E department
  • Make your way to A&E and ask for the mental health team
  • Call the Samaritans 116 123 – they are open 24 hours a day and there to listen.
  • Make an emergency appointment with your GP
  • Contact your local crisis team

These are just a few ways you can get help and trust me reaching out for help can save your life or someone else’s, it for sure saved mine!

A brilliant website to look at is STOP suicide I would highly recommend checking this page out.

How long does suicidal feeling last for?

Well this can vary from person to person and well it could last days, months or years but what is more important is that we reach out for help as this can cut down the amount of time you will feel suicidal for. If you know someone who is suffering then maybe you could reach out to someone for them or encourage them to reach out and being there for them along the way.

The facts

So I want to open people eyes to suicide as this is something which can affect nearly every one of us! So lets stamp the stigma and open our eyes. In 2015…

  • 6,188 suicides were registered in the UK
  • In England and the UK, female suicide rates are at their highest in a decade
  • Male rates remain consistently higher than female suicide rates across the UK and Republic of Ireland – most notably 3 times higher in the UK

So why is raising awareness for suicide so important to me?

Well this is a hard question for me to answer but I try to be as open and truthful as possible with you as I don’t want to hide away anymore and how can I help people if I just give them the bits I want to share! So as you are aware I have struggled with mental health a lot of my life and it is a bit of a rollercoaster. I am currently in the middle of that rollercoaster at the moment. Anyways I will get to the point, so I attempted suicide now twice and I have been lucky enough to have the support of family and friends who got me the support I need. Most of all I have seen the pain it causes for other people and well I think there are a lot of people out there who would have not gone through with the act if they had the support they needed but as it is for most mental health there is a stigma which surrounds it and as soon as you mention suicide people don’t know what to say and just seem to shy away from you.

It is no different to being poorly as these people going through these thoughts are poorly mental health is no different to physical health apart from it seems to be a case that no-one wants to actually talk about it. I find people seem to think it is cowardly, well it is not as it is like you have no way out and if anything people do this to stop burdening the people they love!
